Testing Environmental and Biological Availability
Testing environmental and biological availability reveals the fraction of contamination in the environment free for dispersal and absorption by organisms. This is a good way of estimating substance concentrations in organisms (bio-accumulation) and for establishing and testing standards.
Eurofins has included testing of substance availability in its analysis portfolio. We use CaCl2 extraction for metals and the Tenax extraction method, developed by RWS Waterdienst (Ministry of Infrastructure and Water management), for organic compounds.
The standard sediment analysis package tests samples for organochlorine pesticides (OCB), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals. Eurofins can also expand this to include other analyses. We adhere to the relevant Waterdienst protocol to guarantee quality assurance. This sets requirements for duplicate differences, reference samples and additional analyses such as total organic carbon, reproducibility and reporting threshold.
