New | Milk Protein Allergen Test by ELISA

Contact us

We are pleased to announce that we have a new method for milk allergen testing at our UK laboratories. The method has been accredited under our UKAS No. 0342 flexible scope to the ISO17025 standard.

This new method uses a sensitive ELISA-based approach for the combined detection of both casein and beta-lactoglobulin, the two major milk proteins that are known allergens.

Previously, Eurofins Food Testing UK offered separate tests for casein and beta-lactoglobulin. While these options remain available, the new milk protein ELISA test now provides a combined solution for clients who require broader allergen screening for milk in a single, validated method.

About the ELISA milk protein test

The SENSISpec ELISA for milk proteins is based on NIST 1549a reference material and is validated for use on a wide range of food products, selected ingredients, rinse waters, and swabs. Results are reported as 'milk proteins' and do not differentiate between casein and beta-lactoglobulin individually. This method supports food manufacturers, processors, and hygiene monitoring teams with a reliable tool for allergen risk management.

The test offers a quantification range of 0.4 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg for food samples, with swab limit of detection (LOD) of 20 ng/ml.

New test codes for milk protein ELISA

  • UD0HR – Milk proteins (Food)
  • UD0HP – Milk proteins (Swab)

This new option complements our existing casein and beta-lactoglobulin methods, offering greater flexibility and choice depending on client preference and product requirements.

Cross-reactivity and validation

The ELISA test shows limited cross-reactivity with ewe’s milk (0.25%) and goat’s milk (0.30%), consistent with known profiles for casein and beta-lactoglobulin assays. The test is suitable for use across a broad spectrum of food production and cleaning verification applications.

Casein accounts for approximately 80% of bovine milk proteins, with beta-lactoglobulin comprising around 10% and being the major allergen component of whey. This combined ELISA solution allows for efficient monitoring of both in a single workflow.

Clients can still select separate tests for casein or beta-lactoglobulin where specific identification or lower limits of quantification are required. This addition to our allergen testing portfolio ensures our clients benefit from greater testing flexibility in line with evolving needs.
