NEW | PCR Allergen Testing for Celery, Soya & Mustard

Contact us

Eurofins is pleased to announce the launch of new PCR allergen testing methods for the detection of celery, soya and mustard in food, swabs and rinse water samples. The PCR tests offer improved specificity and help to reduce cross-reactivity issues which can sometimes be seen with ELISA-based testing, especially in complex food matrices. The methods have been accredited under our UKAS No. 0342 flexible scope to the ISO17025 standard.

The expansion of our food allergen testing portfolio includes a new PCR test for celery, addressing a previous gap due to the lack of a reliable ELISA method. We now also offer PCR-based detection for soya and mustard, complementing our existing ELISA tests and offering clients a flexible approach to food allergen analysis.

What is PCR allergen testing?

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) identifies allergenic ingredients by detecting species-specific DNA. Although DNA is not itself an allergen, its presence is a strong indicator of potential allergen contamination. PCR is recommended where ELISA tests are unsuitable due to cross-reactivity with ingredients such as beans or peas in soya-containing products.

Allergens now available via PCR method

  • Celery – new allergen test now available by PCR
  • Soya – new PCR test now complements ELISA method
  • Mustard – new PCR test now complements ELISA method

PCR allergen testing suitable for wide variety of matrices

  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Dairy
  • Drinks
  • Herbs and spices
  • Nuts and grains
  • Flours
  • Bakery items
  • Ready meals
  • Sauces
  • Confectionery
  • Selected ingredients
  • Rinse waters
  • Swabs

These PCR allergen tests help UK food manufacturers, processors, and brands reduce risk and enhance labelling compliance for allergenic ingredients. With improved sensitivity and reliability, PCR is especially useful in verifying allergen cleaning validation or trace detection where traditional ELISA may be less effective.
