These include:

  • Body fluids: blood, saliva, semen and excretion products

  • Body tissues: hair, skin flakes, nails, teeth and bone

Alongside body fluids and tissues, our scientists have significant experience interpreting DNA profiling results, utilising expert software on complex mixtures of DNA where required and reporting the findings in the context of the case.  EFS seeks to address the highest level possible in the hierarchy of propositions (usually activity level) to provide maximum assistance to the Police or other instructing party and the CJS.

The pattern of blood staining is often critical in establishing what actions led to the deposition of the blood. This can help to resolve conflicting accounts by determining, for example, whether someone assaulted a victim or was simply going to their aid.  Pattern analysis is also fundamental in deciding what samples to take for DNA analysis in order to establish from whom the blood could have originated.

Our most experienced scientists often assist cold case investigations and we have an impressive track record of finding new evidence to help support these investigations.  We provide a bespoke service, depending on the needs of the case and will work with investigators and budget holders to meet their requirements. We have a number of specialist examinations available to assist, for further information on our cold case investigation services please click here.

EFS operates a 24 hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year service for biology scene examination across England and Wales.  We have scene attending scientists at each of our biology laboratories (Culham - Oxfordshire, Birchwood Park - Cheshire, Tamworth - Staffordshire, Wakefield - West Yorkshire).  This group of scientists are all experts in body fluids, DNA and BPA and are available to help set scene examination strategy, interpret the findings and provide on-going advice as the case progresses.
